Iowa City Schools releases statement on deaths of teacher, student during field trip

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Iowa City Community School District released a statement on Thursday regarding the deaths of a teacher and a student during a field trip.
Early Tuesday afternoon, the Johnson County Sheriff's Office responded to Lake MacBride near the Coralville Reservoir spillway on a report of an adult and a child in the water. The sheriff's office said that first responders located a woman, identified as Hannah Jorgensen, 24, of Tiffin, and pulled her from the water. Jorgensen was pronounced dead at the scene.
First responders continued searching for the child into the night on Tuesday until efforts had to be paused. The search was resumed Wednesday morning, and at around 1:30 p.m., authorities found the child's body. The sheriff's office identified the child as 10-year-old Ahmed Osman of Iowa City.

Our hearts are shattered by the loss of two beloved members of our Borlaug Elementary family, fifth-grade teacher Hannah Jorgensen and fifth-grade student Ahmed Osman.
There are simply no words that can adequetly express the depth of this loss. Hannah and Ahmed were so much more than members of our school community. They were a teacher and student, a colleague and classmate, a friend, and most importantly, deeply loved members of their families.
Their absence will be felt in the classrooms and hallways of Borlaug, in the lives of those who loved them, and throughout our entire school district community.
In the difficult days ahead, we will hold one another close and continue to surround the Borlaug community with love, care, and support.
We will remember Hannah. We will remember Ahmed. And we will carry their memory with us.
Jorgensen was a fifth-grade teacher, and Osman was a fifth-grade student at Borlaug Elementary School. The two were there for the School of the Wild class field trip. According to the district's website, School of the Wild is part of the University of Iowa College of Education's UI WILD Initiative and provides a week of outdoor learning for each fifth-grade student in the district. Activities include tagging and releasing birds, exploring woodlands and wetlands, and learning about prairie sustainability.

Baby Jane Doe was found abandoned in Washington, D.C., on March 20, 1998. She would now be 28, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). As of today, seven missing children from Washington, D.C. are listed with the NCMEC, and the oldest case dates back to 1961. Notably, not all missing children are reported to the NCMEC, but they should be.
