Illinois could bill gunmakers for costs of gun violence

Illinois state lawmakers are considering legislation to bill gunmakers for the costs of gun violence.
Officials say that gun violence costs the state of Illinois $20 billion each year for things like emergency services, funerals and law enforcement. The Responsibility in Firearm Legislation Act (Senate Bill 2279) would require gun makers to contribute to a state fund to offset those costs.
Lawmakers would determine the fine depending on how many of its guns are tied to shootings in the state. If passed, the Responsibility in Firearm Legislation Act would be the first bill of its kind in the nation.
