August declared No-Kill Shelter Month in Illinois

Governor JB Pritzker proclaimed August as No-Kill Shelter Month in Illinois.

Pritzker emphasized his commitment to making the entire state no-kill. According to a release from Best Friends Animal Society:

This critical initiative underscores Illinois’ commitment to making the entire state no-kill, which means saving every healthy or treatable pet in shelters.

The release says residents can help Illinois’ homeless pets by supporting local community shelters or rescue groups. Many shelters across the state need fosters for large dogs, who take roughly twice as long to get adopted, according to Best Friends’ data.

“Governor Pritzker’s announcement marks a major milestone for the no-kill movement in Illinois,” Julie Castle, CEO of Best Friends Animal Society, said. “Illinois has made impressive progress in saving the lives of pets, but achieving a no-kill future for the state requires a collective effort from community members, animal welfare professionals, and elected officials.”

Illinois joins Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and West Virginia in declaring statewide proclamations supporting the no-kill movement.
