BYU's Wyatt Parry wins Rudy Scholz Award as college rugby's top male player
PROVO — Wyatt Parry was excited about his role on the development, about his future, and about the chance to bring BYU rugby back where he knows the Cougars belong: competing for championships. But mostly, in this moment, he was a little confused. Last Saturday, the 5-foot-10 scrum half...
Prep boys volleyball: Wolves, Mustangs bounced from state playoffs
NORTH LOGAN – It was a tough day for the two Region 11 boys volleyball teams in action Saturday in the first round of the 4A state playoffs. High school track: Timpview’s Lily Alder, West Jordan’s Dominic Overby highlight Day 1 of BYU Invite with state records
The opening day of the BYU Invitational track meet on Friday was an eventful one, with four new state records set and a couple of near misses. Timpview sophomore Lily Alder toppled a decade-old state record in the 800 meters, Dominic Overby got his coveted long jump record by ½ inch — something wind couldn’t deny him this time — and then in the finale on the track after 11 hours of running events, Bingham’s girls and Corner Canyon’s boys each set state records in the 4x200 relay. This year’s BYU Invitational features 3,278 athletes and 132 high schools from around the Intermountain West and continues on Saturday with another 10-plus hours of events on the track and the field. Alder’s performance was the highlight of a meet that started in the rain and ended in the sunshine. She ran a blistering 2:07.28 in the 800 meters, beating her personal best by two seconds but then also topping the previous state record by over a second.
Successful and suave: Provo baseball team doing things the right way
Gentlemen. Scholars. Athletes. The Provo baseball team lived up to one of coach Lance Moore’s favorite mottos in Friday’s 10-0 mercy-rule victory against Hillcrest in Game 1 of the best-of-three 4A regionals. “Gentlemen” because a huge collision at first base didn’t lead to a bench-clearing brawl like it...
High school baseball: 4A/2A playoff roundup from Saturday’s games
Cottonwood 9, Hurricane 8 No. 17 seed Hurricane started hot, jumping out to a 7-0 lead in the first two innings, but No. 16 seed Cottonwood stormed back to complete the 2-0 sweep and advance to the 4A Super Regionals against top seeded Dixie. Austin Carver struck out ten batters for the Colts, and added an RBI. Ladanian Gutierrez drove in four runs, including a homer. Mountain Crest 12, Tooele 0 No. 12 seed Mountain Crest shut out No. 20 seed Tooele to sweep the first round series. It relied heavily on the trio of JC Jones, Maxwell Hornsby, and Zyan Foulger, who each drove in multiple runs. Kayden Cullimore kept the Tooele offense at bay, as he pitched a complete game and allowed just 3 hits.
Utah’s Hockey History: Rollerbees
SALT LAKE CITY – The third installment of the “History of Utah Hockey” series is about the sport’s “side hustle,” roller hockey. The Utah Rollerbees were one of 12 teams to play in the initial season of Roller Hockey International in 1993. Like most teams in the RHI, the Rollerbees’ roster featured minor league hockey players, mostly Salt Lake Golden Eagles, like Rich Chernomaz, Rick Lessard, Brett and Todd Harkins, and Paul Skidmore.
High school baseball: Offense powers Lehi past Skyridge
After splitting the first two games of the series, Lehi took the third and final game against Skyridge by a final score of 10-3 on Friday. “Skyridge is a very good team. They swung the bat good and it’s been that way every game that we’ve played them. I was really pleased and thought that the difference was our guy on the mound, TJ Peterson. He did some good things on a day where there were a lot of runs scored. I thought he really handled himself well out there for a guy he was only making his second start,” said Lehi head coach Eric Madsen. Early on, Skyridge wasted no time, getting out front early in the first inning on an RBI single by Kamden Stafford that brought in Lincoln Zinn. Lehi would go on to answer in a big way, though, scoring two runs in the second inning and three runs in the third before really breaking the game open with a five-run fourth inning, with most of the damage being done with two outs.
