Oregon earthquake preparedness exercise will happen on the coast Wednesday
What officials are calling Oregon’s largest coastal earthquake preparedness exercise is scheduled to happen in Newport on Wednesday. State legislators, Lincoln County and Oregon Department of Human Services’ Office of Resilience and Emergency Management personnel will be on hand for the installation of evacuation assembly point equipment at Newport Municipal Airport.
Sheriff’s deputies, Newport police arrest man after report of stolen vehicle, chase
About 6:02 a.m. Tuesday Willamette Valley Communications Center dispatch received a report of a vehicle stolen from the Siletz Valley Charter School in Siletz. The owner of the vehicle also reported that there was a firearm stored in the vehicle. Dispatch broadcast detailed information to the Newport Police Department, who had Officers on duty, in an attempt to locate the vehicle.
In Lincoln County, agencies prepare for Cascadia earthquake
Your browser does not support the audio element. Hundreds of people gathered over the last two days at the Newport Municipal Airport to practice setting up what’s called an Evacuation Assembly Point. The new equipment comes from the state Office of Resilience and Emergency Management, and contains tents, cots, medical supplies and food to create a central place for people who need to be airlifted to safety after an emergency on the coast, and also a staging place to receive incoming supplies. We talk to Ed Flick, Director of OREM, and Lincoln County Emergency Manager Samantha Buckley about how these kinds of events help prepare for big disasters that may be in our future.
Historical society has new executive director
The Lincoln County Historical Society (LCHS), which governs the Pacific Maritime Heritage Center on the Bayfront and the Burrows House Museum on Southwest Ninth Street in Newport, has a new executive director following Susan Tissot’s retirement. Jeffrey Syrop was hired by the board of directors and took over in May. Lincoln County to host largest earthquake drill ever held on Oregon Coast
Emergency Management personnel from around the state are meeting starting this week for the largest Cascadia Earthquake drill ever held on the Oregon Coast. During the two-day exercise that starts Tuesday, around 80 volunteers and first responders will practice assembling an evacuation point at the Newport Airport. The event will also feature rescue helicopter demonstrations and preparedness activities.
