Liberal wins district championship 5-4 over Lockwood

The Bulldogs rally from a 3-1 deficit to beat Lockwood in the class 1 district 6 championship.

LIBERAL, Mo. -- Liberal High School softball found itself trailing to Lockwood 3-1 in the bottom of the 5th inning of Tuesday's class 1 district 6 championship game.

The Bulldogs promptly scored the next four runs, sparked by a solo home run from Taylor Swarnes and punctuated with Ava Garrett's 2-RBI single.

Liberal starting pitcher Jordan Goodell picks up the win after pitching all seven innings. She earns her 500th career strikeout with the second out in the top of the 7th inning.

With Lockwood down to its final out, Gracyn Clawson then hit a double off the center field wall, which brought the tying run to 3rd base and the go-ahead run to 2nd.

Goodell then picked up her 501st career strikout to end the threat and send the Bulldogs to the state quarterfinals.

"I knew that with our defense... and the trust I have in them -- we were going to get out of that some way," Goodell says. "I just knew it was going to go well for us."

Liberal faces Ash Grove in the class 1 quarterfinals on Tuesday, May 14th.
