A 38-year-old Lexington Park man is behind bars after allegedly trying to kill a man following a dispute at a local bar Sunday night.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office identified the man arrested as Winston Warren Smith.

The incident occurred at the Paradise Bar and Lounge on Great Mills Road in Lexington Park.

According to court documents filed by Deputy David Katulich, a 64-year-old man sustained multiple stab wounds after being attacked by the defendant outside the bar. The wounded man was flown to an area hospital for medical treatment.

A sheriff’s office press release, which did not provide the wounded man’s identity, reported his condition as stable.

The stabbing victim, according to Katulich’s investigation, had been playing pool inside the bar, “when he accidentally knocked over the defendant’s drink.”

The man offered to buy Smith a new drink, but the defendant reportedly wanted the spilled beverage to be replaced immediately.

Katulich said a verbal argument then ensued and quickly escalated.

Smith allegedly threw a pool cue at the man, striking him on the head, court documents say.

The two were separated by other patrons but when Smith’s accuser exited the barroom he was allegedly attacked by the defendant.

“Several videos of the assault were provided by witnesses,” Katulich wrote in court papers.

Smith was later apprehended during a traffic stop.

Smith has been charged with first- and second-degree attempted murder as well as first- and second-degree assault. He is being held without bond.

A district court hearing on the charges Smith is facing is scheduled for May 9.
