FAIRLEA- This time of year, the goal is to live to play another week.

And after Friday night’s victory over the Princeton Lady Tigers, the Greenbrier East Lady Spartans will do just that.

East won 4-1 and claimed the Class AAA Region 3, Section 2 championship in front of a large and rowdy crowd at Spartan Yards.

There was a little bit of everything in the game. Fans yelling from the stands. Injuries. Clutch hitting and clutch pitching, and a ticket punching to the Regional Championship Series next week.

Lily Carola was a force on the mound for the Spartans. She tossed a complete game no-hitter and had 11 strikeouts. She kept the Tigers off balance all night with her velocity and off-speed stuff.

The Spartans jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning on a sac fly from Taylor Boswell that scored Alanis McClary who had gotten on base after getting hit by a pitch.

East added two more runs in the third that started with a Reagan Cline single. The speedy freshman scored two batters later and with two outs when Boswell ripped a single up the middle to center field. Carola then looped a base hit to center that fell just out of the reach of a diving Riley Riggs and the Spartans took a 3-0 lead into the fourth frame.

Zoey Agnew scored for the Tigers in that fourth inning. She got hit by Carola in the batter’s box and advanced to third on a couple of passed balls and when McClary tried to throw her out from her catcher’s spot, it skipped into the outfield for a Princeton run and a 3-1 East lead.

The Spartans (19-9) completed their scoring for the night in the bottom of the sixth when Cline ripped an RBI triple to the right field fence. Jenna Groves came around to score on the play. Later that inning, Cline collided with Agnew on the third base line and both players laid on the ground for a short while. Cline was slow to get up, but Agnew had to be carried to the dugout. She was carried to the parking lot after the game concluded as well.

Cline and Boswell led the offensive attack for East. Cline went 3-3 with a triple, a run, and an RBI while Boswell was 2-4 with a double, a run, and two RBIs.

Emma Johnson pitched well for the improved Tigers. She went six innings, allowed seven hits, three earned runs, and had six strikeouts.

The Spartans will now play the wait-and-see game for their opponent in the regionals next week. It will be either George Washington or St. Albans.
