SUMMERSVILLE- In what was essentially a pitcher’s duel as each team had just four hits apiece, it was a 5-run fourth inning that sealed the Nicholas County Grizzlies’ 6-1 victory over the Greenbrier East Spartans on Monday, April 15.

With the game tied at 1-all heading to the fourth frame, the floodgates opened for the Grizzlies and the Spartans just quite simply, never recovered.

East committed three errors in the inning that basically jumpstarted the Grizzlies rally. A passed ball also allowed Nicholas County to score as they went ahead without ever really hitting the ball hard or consistently. After four, the Grizzlies led 6-1.

The Spartans (6-13) attempted a comeback and had two runners on in the seventh, but Ashton Cochran was picked off by the pitcher and the game ended there.

Gabe Patton had the only RBI for East and he also pitched for the Spartans. He allowed only one earned run and just four hits while striking out six.

The Grizzlies got a huge game on the mound from senior Cole Brown. He pitched a 7-inning complete game and had 12 strikeouts.

Cochran went 2-3 for East at the plate.
