Local veteran places 2,000 flags in yard for Memorial Day

LESTER, WV (WVNS) – In honor of Memorial Day, many are flying American flags to remember those who died serving their country.

One Raleigh County family took the tradition of hanging American flags to a different level. Community members who drove past this home in the Lester area witnessed an overwhelming amount of American flags.

From the top of the hill, to the driveway, and even on the side of the road, American flags are displayed in honor of Memorial Day.

Linda Bowling said the community enjoys the gesture done by her husband ‘Buck’.

“They’ll ask him, when it’s getting close to Memorial Weekend and they’ll say, ‘are you gonna put your flags out?,” said Bowling.

Linda’s husband ‘Buck’ started this tradition about five years ago. 59News asked Linda about her husband’s time in the military and she said even after serving, he still takes the time to do this.

“He was in the army. He was over there in Vietnam. He was there for about six months. He stepped on a landmine and messed his legs up, but he walks…he worked in the mines for years. He lost his leg about five years ago but that didn’t keep him down. He still goes,” said Bowling.

She said this tradition is definitely going to be passed down for years to come.

“I look forward to it and it’ll be continued on if something happens to him. My sons will see to it,” ended Bowling.
