Wilson's Wish says goodbye
For "Farmer Dave" and Tonya Edwards, it's the goodbyes that hurt the most. Late this summer, the founders of Wilson's Wish announced they would be saying goodbye to their Luxemburg farm to move closer to family. The farm provided refuge for animals others felt they could no longer care for, including Lily Beans, a goat that uses a wheelchair, and Lyle, a three-legged cow.

Luminous water tower, new housing, more Lawrence Town Center updates
It's been 13 months since Boardwalk Development Co. CEO Jim Ostrom stood in a wet, muddy field to throw the ceremonial first shovel of dirt to start construction of a sprawling new mixed-use neighborhood in the Town of Lawrence. As he looked out on the same site on the warm, sunny morning on Oct. 7 Ostrom was impressed by the farm field's multifaceted transformation into Lawrence Town Center in such a short time. The first of more than a dozen homes are under construction and the first apartment building's second elevator shaft is quickly rising. Town Center Drive now connects Mid Valley Drive to Williams Grant Drive, the neighborhood's western and eastern boundaries. Several more roads have been paved in asphalt. Recreation trails have been paved, and work has started on resident amenities like pickleball and basketball courts. In Love Park, the development's centerpiece, bridges will soon span the 6-acre lake to connect a central island to the shore. Everywhere young trees and vegetation have been planted. "It’s kind of crazy but on a beautiful day it’s rewarding to be here," Ostrom told the Press-Gazette. "It's an exceptional day. We're making fabulous progress." Even more crazy: The 153-acre site bounded

Appleton sisters ran dry goods store in years before women could vote
At a time when women didn't have a vote and there was no law preventing banks from turning them away, there were three sisters who ran a shop in downtown Appleton. It closed 60 years ago, but Geenen’s Dry Goods served the Appleton area for nearly seven decades, and was run by the Geenen sisters for almost all of it. It stood in what is now the 100 block of East College Avenue. The store was organized in 1896 as Geenen Koch and Smith, by the Misses Minnie, Dina and Anna Geenen, A.J. Koch and William Smith. The store was small and offered limited stock. Just two years later, the sisters purchased the shares of Koch and Smith, and the company became known as D. M. and A. Geenen. The three sisters handled the business alone at that time. Advertisements printed in the newspapers show they sold women’s clothing, coats, millinery, jewelry, undergarments, perfumes, household linens and China to name just a few. A Jan. 27, 1909 Post-Crescent article spoke about a Dutch spinning wheel on display in a store window, “A reminder of the days of our grandmothers, who spun flax on spinning wheels and made all their own
