LE MARS, Iowa (KCAU) – Although the weather has been on the gloomier side, biking season is just around the corner.

The Le Mars Police Department is getting ready for the spring season by implementing a new trail safety patrol. Volunteers will be responsible for keeping 11 miles of recreational trails safe for community members.

“The objectives are to report any trail deficiencies that could be safety-related to us, and any other vandalism or suspicious activity on the trail,” Le Mars Chief of Police Kevin Vande Vegte said. “We want them to be highly visible and just offer assistance to anybody that’s out on the trail that may need help.”

Although the trails have been too wet to enjoy, it seems that even the safety volunteers are ready for the season to begin.

“A handful of volunteers are ready, I don’t think we’re going to have a problem filling these shifts,” Chief Vande Vegte said. “We’re just asking for a two hour commitment once a day, and I think it’s a great way to give back to the community, get out and get some fresh air.”

The Le Mars Police Department said that if the weather permits, they are looking to send out safety patrol volunteers next week.
