Alabama man sentenced for sextortion scheme involving Kansas student

LAWRENCE, Kan. (WDAF) — An Alabama man has been sentenced in connection with a sextortion case against a University of Kansas student.

Devaris Howard, 21, of Gadsden, was sentenced to 41 months in prison by the Douglas County District Attorney Thursday. Charges stem from incidents that happened between August and October 2022 when Howard threatened to distribute compromising pictures of the 19-year-old student that were taken when she was 13.

She did not comply with his demands and alerted police of his threats.

The incidents were investigated by the Special Victims Unit of the Lawrence Police Department and the Gadsden, Alabama Police Department.
