Harney County Lincoln School Cleanup Project
HARNEY COUNTY-Harney County was awarded a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Brownfield Cleanup Grant (CA# 4B-02J52001) in November 2023. The County will be using funds from this grant to remove hazardous building materials and an aboveground heating oil tank from the former Lincoln School property. The site will be redeveloped into the Harney County Justice Center.

Burns Interagency Fire Zine will be conducting prescribed burns
HARNEY COUNTY-May is Wildfire Awareness Month! Part of bring “aware” is being prepared, and part of being prepared is prescribed fire. As soon as this week, or conditions allow firefighters from the Burns Interagency Fire Zone will conduct a 100 acre burn in the West Silvies Unit. The unit is located on the southwest side of Silvies Valley, just off the 3140 road.
Tales of the Past: Crane was a railhead in a ranching region
Crane is an unincorporated community in Harney County, Oregon, about 29 miles southeast of Burns, Oregon. It was initially settled as a ranching center. It was named for nearby features Crane Creek and Crane Creek Pass. The creek is believed to be named for the Sandhill crane, which was once a prominent bird species in the region. A post office was established on June 10, 1895, with Henry Turner as first the postmaster, and it was discontinued in 1903. When the Union Pacific Railroad was completed from Ontario, Oregon, in 1916, the post office was reopened on Oct. 11, 1916. ...
