Laporte community supports couple facing health crises

To say that Barb and Gary Benson of Laporte are facing serious health challenges — would be an understatement.

Last year Barb began her fight with breast cancer but went into remission in February.

Then Gary began having symptoms of heart trouble, including swelling of legs and shortness of breath. He was airlifted to Abbott Hospital in the Twin Cities where he underwent triple bypass surgery. Since then Gary has had many medical appointments in the Twin Cities and will continue to have more over the next several months.

Last week, after feeling dizzy and suffering headaches, Barb was diagnosed with lesions on the brain. She is currently in a Fargo Hospital where she will have 10 rounds of radiation and additional treatments.

To support Barb and Gary, their family, friends and neighbors are planning two benefit events.

With the slogan “Barb’s Fight is Our Fight!” and breast cancer’s signature Pink Ribbon, they will hold a benefit to support the couple June 13 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Laporte School. The benefit will include a silent auction, bake sale, dinner and kids’ activities — freewill donations accepted.

Two days later on June 15, a 5K Fun Run, will be held starting at 9 a.m. at the Laporte Pavilion. The first 75 participants will receive free headbands.

“Tea Bombs” on site will be served by Wolf Pack Nutrition, with profits going to Barb and Gary.
