Florida residents trapped by gators and snakes in floodwaters: ‘It’s like an apocalyptic-type event’

Floridians experienced an ‘apocalyptic-type event’ caused by heavy rains that left high floodwaters Getty Residents of a Florida community have been trapped in their homes for days by a historic rainstorm that left floodwaters high enough for fish, venomous snakes and alligators to swim right up to homes. Floridians in West Palm Beach’s Riverwalk community have been trapped in their homes, surrounded by nearly 10 inches of floodwater, after what was described as a one-in-1,000-year rain event dumped heavy showers across the region earlier this week. “It’s like an apocalyptic-type event,” resident Don Gentile told WPTV. Some parts of Palm Beach County were left with two to three feet of floodwater earlier this week after days of heavy rain. Roads were closed, and several polling locations were forced to relocate on Election Day Tuesday due to the flooding, according to 12 News. Other residents of the Riverwalk community said the flooding was unlike anything they’d ever seen before, as every street in the gated community had significant levels of flooding. South Florida Mosquito Alert Follows Flooding, 880 Dengue Cases Statewide

The warning lands as Florida logs more than 880 dengue cases this year, a number one researcher has called unprecedented for the state.

King tides, rain are flooding South Florida. What are we doing about it?

Historic, chart-topping king tides submerged South Florida last week, flooding more places deeper and longer than they’d ever seen before. This week, double-digit rainfall filled in the blanks, swamping inland and coastal areas. South Florida is soggy, and all the science says its only going to get worse. That’s bad news for anyone who lives in, works in, owns property in, visits or even passes through South Florida. So, millions of people. But In response, local governments have poured hundreds of millions into solutions over the last few years. Keeping dry for the next decade alone would take billions more — if not tens of billions. They’re elevating roads, buffing up stormwater pumps and replacing drainage pipes with new ones so big an NBA player could walk upright in them. They’re converting golf courses into part-time flood parks to soak up neighborhood drainage. They’re raising seawalls. And the projects appear to be working. Tiffany Troxler, director of science at Florida International University’s Sea Level Solutions Center, said she’s seen projects in Miami neighborhoods that have drastically cut down on flooding. “That’s a really positive sign. We need more of that,” she said. “Without more adaptation projects, we’ll continue to see
