Navigating Palm Beach roads demands strategy, patience | Editorial
It's sometimes hard to distinguish between summer and fall in Palm Beach, at least where the weather is concerned. But there's always a tell-tale sign, as snowbirds begin to return to the island from wherever they spent the summer — from their homes in the Northeast, perhaps, or the mountains of North Carolina. Or from extended trips to Europe and other destinations abroad. And as they return to Palm Beach, they bring with them heavier traffic on the roadways. Locals already are seeing more cars arriving from other parts of the country or being driven again after spending the summer in garages. This isn't news. Traffic congestion has become a fact of life in Palm Beach, but over the past few years, it has regularly tested the patience of drivers and caused tempers to flare behind the wheel. The situation has been exacerbated by the remarkable growth and redevelopment that has occurred on the other side of the bridges in West Palm Beach. Palm Beach may part of a barrier island, but it is not an isolated one. Add in the many road projects underway on the island, and the trip from here to there can be a major hassle.
