Lightning strike, high winds hit Northland Thursday afternoon
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Severe weather swept through the Northland Thursday afternoon, brining with it high winds, heavy rain, and loud thunder. A lightning bolt, captured on a Ring doorbell camera near Gladstone, struck a house. Witnesses said they could feel the reverberations from the ensuing thunderclap for miles.

Platte County Sheriff Mark Owen cut the ribbon with some help from county commissioners Joe Vanover, Dagmar Wood and Scott Fricker at a celebration of the sheriff’s new headquarters on Thursday, April 18. The new location, which is in the former Platte County Resource Center at 11724 NW Plaza Circle, Kansas City in Platte County, contains 39,800 square feet. It houses everything for the sheriff’s office except the communication (dispatch) center, which remains at the sheriff’s former location at the Platte County Administration Building in Platte City. The new headquarters space renovated using federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars that the county received as COVID relief.

(AP) — A man who sped through a red light in Kansas City and crashed into a patrol car has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of an officer and a bystander. Jerron Lightfoot, 20, of Tonganoxie, Kansas, said he was “truly sorry and never intended to hurt anyone” before he was sentenced Wednesday. The Feb. 15, 2023, crash killed Officer James Muhlbauer, who was 42, Jesse Eckes, who was 52, and Muhlbauer’s police dog, Champ. Police determined that Lightfoot sped up to nearly 90 mph just two seconds before hitting Muhlbauer’s car on the driver’s side. The impact sent the car crashing into Eckes, who was sitting on a concrete barrier.
