Lakeville South lifters win big at state meet

Cougars sweep varsity, JV team titles

Lakeville South continued its domination of Minnesota state high school weightlifting, sweeping the team championships and winning nine individual titles at the state meet March 9 in Cannon Falls.

The Cougars scored 42 points to win their fifth consecutive varsity team championship. Northfield and Cannon Falls finished second and third. In the JV division, South won its sixth straight championship with 54 points. Cannon Falls and Moorhead were second and third.

Varsity and junior varsity placement is determined by age, with lifters born in 2007 or earlier competing in the varsity division and those born in 2008 or later going to junior varsity.

Lakeville South’s individual champions included three in the varsity division: senior Colton Rathke in the 61-kilogram weight class, junior Ian Bamford at 67 kg and sophomore Carter Mayer at 96 kg. (One kilogram is equivalent to approximately 2.2 pounds.)
