JOHNSON CREEK — Lake Mills topped previously unbeaten Johnson Creek 9-1 in the first game of a doubleheader at Wuestenberg Field on Saturday, then fell 8-5 in the second game after a late rally by the top-ranked Bluejays.

The L-Cats (8-8) used a seven-run third inning to seize momentum in the opener. The L-Cats drew five walks from starter Dylan Bredlow and scored three runs via error and two more off passed balls. Nolan Kolkovich’s RBI double capped the rally.

Cooper Murphy and winning pitcher Wyatt Werner singled home runs in the sixth.

Werner punched out eight and walked one over 6 1/3 innings, allowing a run on three hits.

“Wyatt was popping on the bump,” Lake Mills baseball coach Adam Hosey said. “Eight strikeouts against that Johnson Creek lineup is impressive. I was proud of Wyatt for being ready to pitch on a Saturday and he was the difference maker.

“We took quality at-bats and got Bredlow’s pitch count up. I liked the way we were swinging the bats. Not committing an error was a key too after a rough fielding game the night before at Poynette. It was good that we didn’t drag anything into the next day from a defensive standpoint.”

The Bluejays (17-1) narrowly avoided being swept. Lake Mills led 4-0 through three innings before Aiden Smith’s two-out two-run double in the fourth cut the deficit to 4-3.

Johnson Creek made it 5-all in the fifth, scoring on ground outs by Tanner Herman and Zach Holland.

The Bluejays utilized five straight singles to plate three go-ahead runs in the seventh. Taylor Joseph started the one-out rally with a base knock, taking second on an error. He scored the go-ahead run on Tanner Herman’s line shot to left. Holland and Luke Hartz added RBI hits for the final margin.

Smith pitched three innings of two-hit ball with three strikeouts in middle relief before turning it over to Ian Heald, who worked a 1-2-3 seventh to earn the decision.

    FRIDAY’S RESULT

POYNETTE — Lake Mills’ baseball team gave up nine unearned runs in a 10-5 road loss to last-place Poynette in Capitol North play on Friday, May 3.

Poynette scored three runs via error in its six-run second inning, adding a two-out two-run single by Hunter Webster to lead 6-1.

The L-Cats (7-7, 2-2 in conference) took advantage of four walks in the sixth to score a run and get within 8-5, however, a two-run error in the sixth allowed Poynette to push its lead out to 10-5.

“Poynette was throwing strikes and putting the bat on the ball,” Hosey said. “And we had a few mishaps. Part of the game is accepting that, but also making sure we are ready to learn from it. It was a tough gut punch because we felt we were prepared and ready to play. Poynette made us make plays, and we were not ready to do that.”

Nolan Kolkovich took the loss for Lake Mills, allowing six unearned runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings. Hunter Frohamder pitched 4 1/3 innings in relief, allowing four runs (one earned) on three hits.

Ty Schaefer led off the Lake Mills seventh with a single against new pitcher Alex Breunig. He took second on a wild pitch and was retired advancing to third on a fielder’s choice to end the game.

Brody Henderson plated James Hafenstein with a two-out line-shot double to left field in the Lake Mills third. Henderson scored on an error in the outfield to give the L-Cats (6-6, 1-2 in conference) a 2-1 lead.

Lodi (8-5, 2-1) tied it up on Eli Schneider’s one-out single in the third.

Lake Mills had runners at the corners with one out in the sixth but a pop out and strikeout ended the frame.

Schneider pitched six innings of one-hit ball with eight strikeouts to earn the decision for the Blue Devils.

Lake Mills starter Ace Everson took the loss, allowing three earned on seven hits with four strikeouts in six frames.
