Overnight Earthquake Shakes Eastern Tennessee Near Knoxville

Another earthquake has rattled eastern Tennessee, this time near the town of Huntsville, about 10 miles southwest of Knoxville. According to USGS, the relatively weak magnitude 2.4 earthquake struck from a depth of 14.4 km at 1:54 am. There were no reports of damage or injury. Today’s earthquake adds to the growing sum of earthquakes Tennessee has had in recent months where the overall volume of earthquakes there appears to be increasing.

Early voting surges ahead of midterms, drawing students across campus

Blount County Zoning Review Task Force gets to work

It just as much about introductions as getting organized Thursday during the first meeting of Blount County’s Zoning Review Task Force. The task force was authorized by the Board of Commissioners in September at the request of County Mayor Jared Anderson. The group’s purpose in the authorizing resolution is consideration of appropriate amendments and updates to the Blount County Zoning Ordinances to comply with the revised Comprehensive Plan that the board has not yet approved. It is also charged to undertake a comprehensive review of the Zoning Ordinance to determine whether its provisions continue to reflect the public’s expectations and the policy objectives of the Board of Commissioners concerning growth, development, land use and infrastructure. The task force members consists of five county commissioners — Nick Bright (Seat 6-A), Misty Davis (6-B), Jessica Hannah (1-A), Jeff Jopling (8-B) and David Wells (10-B) — and three community members — businessman Tony Saddy, UT Stormwater Coordinator Will Luke and former District 9 commissioner/farmer Steve Mikels. The task force elected Bright as chairman and Hannah as vice chair with no other nominations. Mikels nominated Davis, but the county commissioner declined saying she intended to be more a proponent in the group’s discussion that

Blount County Courthouse clock got ahead of time change

Blount County was a little bit ahead in when it began falling back. Drivers along West Broadway or Lamar Alexander Parkway over the last week may have done a double take if they looked at the clock atop the Blount County Courthouse that has been running an hour early the last few days. That will take care of itself on Sunday when Daylight Savings Time comes to an end and everyone else’s clocks fall back one hour. The four clock faces atop the courthouse were upgraded to computer automation in 2000 and that system came pre-programmed with the changes for Daylight Savings Time. Those dates however were the DST settings adjusted by Congress in 1987 that used the first Sunday in April and last Sunday in October. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 expanded DST pushed the start date forward to the second Sunday in March and extended the end date back to the first Sunday in November. The difference often requires the courthouse staff to make corrections to compensate for the out-of-date automated changes. “When we reset the time whenever we spring forward or, we will fall back first, so we’ll set it back an hour, and then a
