The murder of Willis Greene
Willis Greene was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Not “wrong place, wrong time” in the sense that he did anything wrong. Greene was just an old man walking the road. At least, the stories that have been handed down through the years, word-of-mouth, suggest he was old. Truthfully, we know almost nothing about Willis Greene — except that he was black, and that he was murdered on July 12, 1923, and that he was buried by the side of Big Ridge Road west of Oneida, almost where he fell.
Plateau Electric selects Duke Energy manager as new CEO
ONEIDA | Duke Energy’s John Proffitt has been selected as the new chief executive officer of Plateau Electric Cooperative, the cooperative announced Friday. Proffitt will come to PEC from Duke Energy, where he served as director of area operations. He will assume his new role at Plateau Electric on May 15.

Community gathers with D.A.’s office to celebrate victims and recognize victims’ rights
HUNTSVILLE | The weather was less than ideal, but still they came. Hundreds of participants turned out at Huntsville City Park Friday morning for the annual “Walk for Victims.” Hosted by 8th Judicial District Attorney General Jared Effler, the walk commemorates National Crime Victims Rights Week. It was the last walk of the week for Effler and his team, which held similar events in counties throughout the 8th Judicial District throughout the week.
