LAFAYETTE, La. ( KLFY ) — A domestic incident in which a man was seen beating a woman with a baseball bat led to a brief standoff with Lafayette Police overnight, authorities said.

Just after midnight Tuesday Lafayette Police responded at the 200 block of Eighth Street to a report of a domestic violence incident in progress.

Officers spoke to an eyewitness who said a man was seen hitting a woman with a baseball bat. The witness confronted the male suspect in an attempt to stop him from striking the woman, when the suspect pulled a gun and pointed it at the witness. The witness then left the location and called police as the suspect fled to an abandoned residence on Eighth Street, officials said.

Lafayette Police officers were directed to the residence. They were able to confirm the suspect was still inside, and were able to establish communication with him. The suspect initially refused to comply with officers and would not exit the residence. After a brief standoff, he emerged peacefully and surrendered to police without further incident, authorities said.
