Lafayette Police were called out to respond to a domestic disturbance in the 200 block of Eighth Street early Wednesday morning to find a woman with injuries and a man who wouldn’t come out of an abandoned home.

Lt. Jace Quebedeaux with the Lafayette Police Department says they were contacted by a witness who told them a man was hitting a woman with a bat. The witness tried to intervene to help the woman from being hit, but he left after the suspect pointed a gun at him.

The suspect was seen fleeing on foot and running into an abandoned home on Eighth Street.

When police got to the scene, they did indeed find that the suspect was inside the abandoned home. They tried unsuccessfully to get the suspect to come out of the abandoned house by talking to him, but the man was not listening to their orders.

Officers continued talking to him, and Quebedeaux says the suspect refused to come out of the home.

There was a brief standoff between the suspect and the Lafayette Police Department, but eventually, the suspect came out of the home peacefully, and he surrendered to the police.

The suspect was arrested. The woman was treated and is recovering from minor injuries according to Quebedeaux. He says this whole situation began to unfold at around 12:15 Wednesday morning after the person who tried to prevent the woman from being hit with the bat called the police to ask for help with the situation.
