CLAY AND PUTNAM COUNTY – The Indiana Department of Transportation announces overnight lane and ramp closures that will impact I-70 in Clay and Putnam Counties. Beginning on or after Monday evening, October 12, INDOT contractors will close the right lanes of I-70 between Tabortown Street near Brazil (16.5-mm) and County Road 1100 W. (39.6-mm) near Little Point. The westbound on-ramp at State Road 243 will also close. The purpose of these closures is to set camera towers and digital message signs.

Bridge beam setting to halt traffic on I-865 overnight

Overnight lane stoppages and a ramp closure are planned on Interstate 865 in Boone County as crews set bridge beams for the Ford Road bridge project. The work is expected to begin on or after Oct. 5, according to a community announcement from the Indiana Department of Transportation . Drivers traveling westbound on I-865 near Ford Road should expect traffic to stop for periods of up to 20 minutes between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. During that overnight operation, the I-465 northbound ramp to I-865 westbound will be closed. Drivers are directed to continue on I-465 eastbound, turn around at U.S. 421, also known as Michigan Road, and return to I-465 westbound to reach I-865 westbound. The following night, on or after Oct. 6, additional overnight traffic stoppages are planned on I-865 eastbound near Ford Road. INDOT said motorists should expect 20-minute traffic holds between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. No ramp closures are scheduled for that phase of the beam-setting work. INDOT is reminding motorists to reduce speeds, avoid distractions and use extra caution in work zones. The agency noted that weather or other conditions could affect the schedule. According to this morning’s numbers from GasBuddy.com, the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded is $4.38, five cents lower than Monday. Here in Illinois, the statewide average is down seven cents at $4.68. In Indiana, the statewide average is $3.79 a gallon, a dime lower than the beginning of the week, making Indiana the “low price leader.” California has the highest prices in the nation, with a statewide average of $6.39 a gallon, an eight-cent increase from Monday.

School bus costs rise as Indiana districts compare solutions

School transportation officials from across Indiana used a regional networking meeting to compare recruitment strategies, discuss student behavior issues and confront the rising cost of replacing school buses. The Transportation Directors Networking Group held its first meeting on Sept. 23, bringing transportation leaders together in a Zoom session hosted by Wabash Valley Education Service Center , according to a community announcement. Among the most common concerns was the challenge of recruiting and retaining school bus drivers. Transportation directors discussed difficulties filling regular routes and maintaining substitute driver pools, particularly in smaller communities. One district shared details of a "Drive the Bus" event that allows potential applicants to try operating a school bus in a parking lot. Other recruitment efforts included highlighting pay rates on banners and reaching out to parents and school employees who may be available before or after school hours. Participants also discussed student conduct on buses and the training drivers need to support behavior management, build relationships with students and assist those with special education needs. Technology and operations challenges Transportation leaders compared routing software, GPS platforms and electronic vehicle inspection tools while noting that internet connectivity can limit the effectiveness of technology on rural routes.
