In Gaylord, Memorial Day event honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice
GAYLORD — Under sunny skies, over 100 people attended Gaylord's annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony on Monday, May 26. Memorial Day has been recognized since the Civil War, but it wasn’t until 1971 that it was established as a federal holiday held on the last Monday of May to honor those who have given their lives in service to the country. It is a “Day of Remembrance." Ron LeBourdais, commander of the Ralph Holewinski VFW Post 1518, noted that 56 Otsego County residents have been killed while serving the country, starting with the Spanish American War in 1898 and extending through the War in Afghanistan (2001-2021). The parade started just before 10 a.m. and came down Main Street to the Otsego County War Memorial in front of the Otsego County Building. Just before 11 a.m., the Memorial Day ceremony started. It included wreath presentations by community organizations and the keynote address from Retired U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer Steve Ralston, who is also the chaplain for Post 1518. He encouraged everyone to never forget the sacrifice of service men and women and their families. Later, the VFW and other community members placed 1,750 American flags on the graves of

Summer concert series brings music, crowds to downtown Gaylord
GAYLORD — The popular Downtown Gaylord Concert Series that brings live music to the heart of the city has returned for the 2025 season. Every Friday night at 7 p.m., starting May 16, musical acts from Northern Michigan and neighboring states will perform for free at Claude Shannon Park, according to organizer Jordan Awrey. There are 14 concerts scheduled this year. "The concerts will run until Aug. 22 and the only Friday that we will miss is during Alpenfest (July 8-12) because there is already so much going on," Awrey said. Last year's performances drew some impressive crowds to downtown Gaylord, especially when there were other events going on like a car show. "A lot of people said they wanted to see certain things this year and we noticed that people like cover bands. So our whole lineup is made up of cover bands this year. We anticipate that when you come to a show, you will likely recognize a song right away," said Awrey. Awrey said most of the bands booked for this year are from Northern Michigan but there will be some out-of-state acts as well. "Our last marketing campaign went from 18 years old all the way

Thriving Jamaican community spurs new grocery, restaurant in Gaylord
GAYLORD — Spurred in part by the growing Jamaican community in the area and around Northern Michigan, a new restaurant and grocery store recently opened in Gaylord. Very quietly and without much fanfare, the Jamaican workforce has thrived in the region. Most are employed under the H-2B visa program that enables employers to temporarily hire foreign workers to perform non-agricultural labor or services when they can't find qualified U.S. workers. Dave Allen, who has lived in Gaylord for the past four years, said an increasing number of Jamaicans have been employed at Albie's Food Products and SunFrog, an apparel manufacturer, in Gaylord. "Through our staffing agency we provide workers to Albie's and Sun Frog who come here to work seasonally and then go home," Allen said. "I got the idea for the grocery store to take care of them and the others who work on Mackinac Island. They form a base market for us." "(The workers) will drive an hour or an hour and a half just come in and shop for food products they are familiar with and in the case of the restaurant, have a Jamaican meal," Allen added. The store, Millie's, and the restaurant, called Jamericana Cuisine,
