Santa parade, artisan market anchor Gaylord holiday events on Dec. 13
GAYLORD — The city has embraced an Alpine theme since the 1960s and this year's Christmas events will lean even further into that identity with a celebration inspired by its sister city Pontresina, Switzerland. All of the Christmas events are scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 13 in the downtown. "We are partnering with the Gaylord Area Council for the Arts to host a Christmas market in the Pavilion from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m.," said Lisa Marie Tobin, executive director of the Downtown Development Authority. "You will be able to engage with local artists and really find that one-of-a-kind gift." Also at the market will be food and beverage options from local restaurants and taverns. Snowbelt Brewery is bringing in a specialty beer and adult cider. Visitors will find "everything from handcrafted pottery to paintings to ornaments," noted Tobin. The Santa parade starts at 5 p.m. down Main Street. "Santa will be coming in on the 1942 fire truck that is in the process of being restored," said Tobin. "Santa and Mayor Todd Sharrard will preside over the ceremony to light the Christmas tree at the corner of Court Avenue and Main Street. The mayor will also make sure to give

How Surfers Scored Shockingly Perfect Great Lakes Waves
Surfing on the Great Lakes has long been considered a highly unpredictable pursuit, often characterized by choppy windswell and frigid conditions. It is a dependent on forces outside a surfer's control, driven by the intense, localized power of freshwater storms rather than ocean groundswell. Recently an active late-autumn storm pattern unleashed a rare swell, gifting a handful of surfers with shockingly perfect, glassy, peeling waves that looked more like a cold-water peak in Tofino or Margaret River than freshwater in the Midwest.

Gaylord's Veterans Day ceremony honors those who responded to the call to serve
GAYLORD — At a time when divisions seem to define the nation, Veterans Day remains a unifying event that has the power to bring everyone together. Despite a cold blustery wind, many gathered under the pavilion in downtown Gaylord on Tuesday, Nov. 11 to celebrate the veterans who served their country at a ceremony presented by the Ralph Holewinski VFW Post 1518. Veterans and observers participated in the event, which included the Pledge of Allegiance, a history of Veterans Day, the performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "God Bless America" by singers from the Gaylord Middle School Chorus, VFW Tribute presentations, a rifle salute and the playing of Taps. "Veterans Day is a celebration of service," said U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman (R., MI), who recalled how his father was drafted at the age of 33 to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He addressed members of the Gaylord Middle School Chorus and encouraged them to "answer the call of service." Tuesday's keynote speaker was U.S. Army veteran Michael Wickson, who received his draft notice in 1970. "The veteran is the one who would give his life to save our lives, to preserve our way of life and
