LA CROSSE (WKBT) -- The La Crosse YMCA- Dahl branch invited the public out for some sidewalk chalk art Wednesday evening.

The activity was part of the YMCA'S plans of recognizing May as mental health awareness month.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experiences mental illness each year,

The La Crosse YMCA says creating artwork with sidewalk chalk is a fun way to encourage mindfulness and a sense of community and is something people of all ages can enjoy.

"We really try to incorporate mental health into just normal activities and sometimes it's fun to color or bring out your artistic side and in this time of year, chalk is just fun when we enter springtime," said Anna Stindt, mental health director of the La Crosse Area Family YMCA.

Throughout the month of May, the La Crosse Area Family Y will offer a variety of activities and mental health resources for individuals and families.
