La Crosse considering eliminating or reducing off-street parking minimum requirements

LA CROSSE (WKBT) -- The City of La Crosse could get rid of all off-street parking minimums in residential zones.

Right now, most cities nationwide require a minimum amount of off-street parking options for each development.

Those minimums differ depending on the property--a bowling alley, for example, requires a minimum of five off-street parking spaces.

The city's Neighborhood Revitalization Commission says off-street parking reduces housing, so eliminating or reducing minimums could inspire developers to generate more housing and more tax revenue.

A study done in 2020 found the city's densest areas had ample parking at all times.

It'll likely be months before any proposals reach Common Council.
