KYLE (KXAN) – Hays County is holding a Tire Collection Event Saturday. The Hays County Environmental Task Force, the Hays County Criminal District Attorney’s Office and the Capitol Area Council of Governments are behind the May 4 event in Kyle.

According to District Attorney Kelly Higgins, the opportunity will let people get rid of their unwanted tires while also cleaning up the county. Tires can leach toxic compounds into the soil, and serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. According to Purdue University, water in a single tire can be a breeding group for tens of thousands of mosquitoes over the course of a season.

Not everyone can participate though. First, you must be a resident of Hays County and be able to prove it with a utility bill, property tax statement or driver’s license. In addition, only passenger and light truck tires will be accepted. They’ll only take 25 tires per vehicle, and tires with rims, skid steer tires and semi-truck or tractor tires will not be accepted.

The event will start at 8 a.m. at 2171 Yarrington Road in Kyle. It will go until 3 p.m. or until they reach capacity.
