    Devils, Lady Rebels Win Section Track Meets

    KNOXVILLE — Greeneville’s Zaydyn Anderson qualified for state in four events in the Class 2A Section East meet on Saturday at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

    Anderson took first in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.71, first in the 200 with a 21:59 and first in long jump with a 23-4.75. He took second in triple jump with a 44-4.75.

    Anderson’s performance helped the Greene Devils claim the Section East title with 100.5 points. The Lady Devils finished 12th with 24 points.

    Already locked in to join Anderson at the state meet are Darien Humphries and the 4x100 relay team. Humphries qualified in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.22, taking second. The boys 4x100 relay team took second with a time of 43.01.

    Other Greeneville athletes have the opportunity to make state, depending on incoming results. Issac Gibson took third in the 800 with a time of 1:59.71 and Jacob Moore took third in pole vault, clearing 12-6.

    Taren Claridy took fourth in the 100, running an 11.11, and Humphries took fourth in triple jump with a 43-2.

    Trey Bailey took fourth in both 1600 and 3200, with times of 4:27.64 and 9:46.95, respectively. Jacey Goodwin took fourth in high jump, clearing 5-0.

    The boys 4x800 took third with a 8:21.48 and the girls 4x800 took third with a 10:30.93.

    South Greene

    MARYVILLE — Friday was as good a day as you can have if you were the South Greene track team. Not only did the Lady Rebels take the No. 1 spot in the Class A East Section meet at Eagleton College and Career Academy in Maryville, but five individuals and three relay teams earned a trip to state, with several more having the chance to sneak in depending on incoming results.

    Tyner Academy won the boys events, with South Greene’s boys finished fourth.

    Ava Clark punched her ticket to state in the 100 hurdles, taking second and setting a school record in the process with a 16.12. She also qualified after taking second in the pentathlon.

    Alexa Gabbard took second in high jump, clearing 4-10 and qualifying for state. Natalie Foshie also joins them as she took second in discus, throwing for 101-6.

    The girls 4x200 relay team, run by Mackenzie Niston, Clark, Abby Hoxie and Gabbard took first with a time of 1:51.37, setting a school record in the process. The girls 4x800 team also qualified for state. Clark, Emma Cutshall, Samantha Birdwell and Natalie Freise combined for a time of 10:56.45, taking second. The 4x400 team of Hoxie, Cutshall, Foshie and Freise qualified with a 4:28.10, taking second and breaking another school record.

    Freise and Gabbard have a chance at state in the pentathlon. Freise could also make it in the 300 hurdles, taking third with a time of 50.95, as could Niston in high jump after clearing 4-8, taking fourth.

    The boys state finished the night with two automatic state qualifiers. Heath Norton took the top spot in the shot put with a 42-5.5 and Dion Blair made state taking first in the decathlon.

    Zackriah Duncan and Nolan Weems have a chance to make state as well, Duncan in the decathlon and Weems in the pole vault after taking fourth with an 11-0.

    While they didn’t qualify for state, the boys 4x800 team set a school record with a 9:25.00, finishing fourth.

    Chuckey-Doak

    While both Chuckey-Doak boys and girls teams finished the section meet at Eagleton in sixth place, they had three individuals earn trips to state.

    Carmella Smock and Niome Merrill will represent the Lady Black Knights while Isaiah Treadway will represent the Black Knights.

    Smock took second in the 3200, running a 12:05.54, and Merrill took second in pole vault, clearing 8-6. Treadway qualified in long jump with a 20-2, taking second place.

    Smock also has a chance to qualify in the 1600 after taking third with a 5:38.90. Brasen Murvin could also qualify in both shot put and discus after finishing third in both events. He threw for 40-8.25 in the shot put and 113-8 in the discus.

    West Greene

    West Greene also made the trip to Maryville on Friday for the section meet. The Lady Buffaloes took 14th while the Buffaloes took 24th.

    Abbey Cox will make her fourth straight state tournament trip after qualifying in discus and shot put. She took first in discus, throwing 102-6.5, and second in shot put, throwing 32-2.

    No boys were able to qualify for state, but Dakota Cassidy took seventh in pole vault, clearing 7-0.
