Back-to-back homers seal Lady Vols run-rule win over Belmont

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The Lady Vols delivered in their only midweek home game of the season, collecting their 18th program win over Belmont.

It didn’t take long for the Lady Vols to get rolling against the Bruins. McKenna Gibson opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single that brought in Kiki Milloy.

A two-run shot by Zaida Puni in the second inning extended the lead to three heading into the third.

Homers continued in the next frame. Milloy sent one to the left center, bringing in both Laura Mealer and Giulia Koutsoyanopulos. The home run came Amanda Ahlin scored on an RBI single by Mealer.

With the scoring in the third, the Lady Vols put together a 7-0 lead by the top of the fourth.

Belmont snuck in a run in the fifth off an error, but they they couldn’t come close to touching the Tennessee lead.

Katie Taylor and Jamison Brockenbrough went back-to-back in the batting order, each launching their first homer of the year.

Brockenbrough’s solo shot put Tennessee up by eight in the bottom of the eighth, the Lady Vols run ruling Belmont 9-1 after six innings. The Lady Vols are now 145-4 against in-state opponents.

Payton Gottshall started off in the circle. She allowed zero runs and collected three strikeouts through three innings. At the start of the fifth inning, Ryleigh White took over in the circle, pitching the final two innings.

UP NEXT: The Lady Vols have their final road series of the regular season, kicking off their action with Alabama on Friday at 7 p.m.
