The Small-Town Ice Cream Shop In Iowa Where You'll Find Endless Scrumptious Treats
Driving through Iowa can mean long stretches of farmland, so it’s always great to see a roadside stop with some snacks or treats – especially when it’s a local, independently-run place that has stood the test of time, rather than a chain. That’s the case for one small-town ice cream in Iowa, hiding in the laid-back locale of Monroe. Now, I’m New Jersey born and raised, so imagine my surprise when I found out that this fan-favorite frosty spot, which has been open since 1992, is named… Jersey Freeze! The name comes from an original 1950 business that was run by a family that raised Jersey cattle, and it stuck. One thing that’s also stuck? The large crowds lined up for delicious, old-school frozen treats from March to October every year.
Man 'ruffing' RAGBRAI by carrying canine friend on back on hilliest-ever route
MELCHER-DALLAS — For John Chemycz, the 'ruffest' part of RAGBRAI is what rides on his back. Chemycz, 46, of San Antonio, Texas, and his dog, Mickey, are on their first RAGBRAI together, though it's the second for Mickey's human: Chemycz rode last year with his wife. When his wife declined to ride this year Chemycz decided to take Mickey, their 3-year-old Jack Russell terrier, in a backpack, wearing a helmet and aviator goggles. ...
Milo became Milo-Ritaville for this year's RAGBRAI, bringing a tropical party to Iowa
MILO — Limbo. Margaritas. A parrot. Tropical portable toilets. Welcome to Milo-Ritaville. Milo has a population of just 778, but as a banner in the town square said, Milo-Ritaville had a population of 20,778 on Day 4 of RAGBRAI. The city square had been remodeled completely to fit the theme. Surfboards were posted...
Seven days on the road, 3,000 fry pies: Amish family serves RAGBRAI riders entire route
MILO — The stand is set up, the fry pies have been put out and now, shortly after 7 a.m. on RAGBRAI’s Day 4, Katie Gingrich has a question. “How hot is it supposed to be?” she asks, an important question when you are selling ice cream and also are Amish without a wealth of information at your fingerprints. ...
