Fort Concho hosts three spooky events this October for Halloween
When we think of the many officers, soldiers, and their families at Fort Concho, we tend to focus too much on the hard daily routines and harsh conditions they endured. So every now and then we find a photo that shows they did enjoy life while exhibiting some amazing creativity at the very isolated Fort Concho. Thus, we have this photo of a costume party that took place almost 150 years ago on Feb. 22, 1876, behind Officers’ Row. Note the wide range of costumes and attire that this group displays. Alice Grierson, wife of the post commander, Col. Benjamin Grierson, noted in one of her letters to her son Robert that all enjoyed the event. In that spirit shown by our military ancestors, Fort Concho will also get creative — admittedly with far more resources than our 1870s folks possessed — and host three Halloween events in October. They are designed to educate, entertain and maybe scare our guests. All three events are fundraisers for the fort with charges of $12 for adults and $10 for children ages 7-17. All guests start their visit at the Barracks 1 Visitor Center at 630 South Oakes Street where there is convenient
