VDOT to implement new zipper merge pilot program near work zones
SHENANDOAH COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) - The Virginia Department of Transportation will be doing routine bridge work on some I-81 bridge overpasses in Shenandoah County. People driving on I-81 southbound in between Toms Brook and Woodstock can expect to see construction equipment on their daily commute. However, VDOT will have sensors that analyze the flow of traffic near the work zone. Once the sensors analyze traffic flow, they will switch signs to either alert drivers of the impending work zone or just alert drivers to slow traffic ahead. If the signs say slow traffic, drivers can expect to use a zipper merge method to drive through a work zone.
