Letter: Fractured limestone poses a threat to wells, creeks and lake
The proposed 80-acre County K quarry poses real threats to the nearby wells and creeks, and ultimately Green Lake. Groundwater flows northwest from the quarry to these areas. There is solid evidence that this limestone ridge is very fractured, which is why it is so appealing to the miners. In the 2010s, a neighbor to the northwest dug a large pond in an old gravel pit and lined it with 100 loads of clay. It lasted 5 years and then developed a hole and drained in 5 days! It emptied north into Dakin Creek (lower in elevation) and ultimately on to Green Lake. In the 1970s, the DNR put red dye in a sinkhole to the west of the proposed site and water in the faucet of a cabin immediately above Powell Spring turned red. In the 1960s, south across the street from the proposed mine, debris from pea vining activity resulted in groundwater spewing green sludge into Powell Spring, a mile to the northwest. We’ve had decades of evidence showing the fractured nature of the bedrock surrounding this quarry—don’t risk our water resources on this quarry by changing the land’s designation from farmland preservation to nonmetallic mining!
