Wisconsin trooper released from ICE custody after 'dramatic experience'

A 21-year-old South African-born Wisconsin State Patrol trooper who was detained Nov. 5 by federal immigration agents was released from custody Nov. 6, according to his attorney. Attorney Marc Christopher confirmed to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that Carel Aaron Van Der Merwe, who was traveling to visit family with a valid work permit, had been released from the Dodge County Jail and was awaiting a ride from his supervisor, the head trooper in Tomah. Christopher said Van Der Merwe was released under an order of supervision, which requires him to periodically check in with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He will also likely be subject to electronic monitoring, potentially through an application on his cellphone rather than an ankle bracelet. Christopher said he plans to speak with Van Der Merwe to discuss the next steps in his case. He expects Van Der Merwe will eventually share his experience publicly but wants to give him time to readjust following his release. "I just told him I wanted him to get back, get reacclimated, just get settled, because I know he's gone through a very dramatic experience," Christopher said. Central Wisconsin Christian claims first gold ball with sweep of Turtle Lake

ASHWAUBENON – A state championship win doesn't happen by accident and doesn't happen without fans sitting on the edge of their seats and cheering with no regard for how their voice may sound later. For Central Wisconsin Christian, it ended with fans watching a Kiley Beer serve hit the top of the net and drop to the floor. "I try to have a lot of confidence going back (to serve), but obviously there's a lot of pressure going back there on game point," Beer said. "I knew that I could do what I trusted. I've trained for this, I've prepared for this. "When I saw it go over the tape and go over, it just hit me and it was great." Central Wisconsin Christian, the No. 2 seed in the WIAA Division 5 state tournament swept Turtle Lake (26-24, 25-23, 26-24) to win its first state championship in school history. The 80-mile journey from Central Wisconsin Christian to the Resch Center, the biggest stage the state has to offer, to now state champions, started years ago. It started long before any of the girls who took to the floor on Saturday, Nov. 7 played a point of high school volleyball.
