Running into stiff competition
PROVIDENCE - In the end, the Avengers were simply outmatched, a difficult truth for a talented team to accept. Playing in the Division II finals for the second straight year, the East Greenwich High School baseball team was once again unable to cap their season on a winning note, this time suffering a series sweep at the hands of the top-seeded Westerly Bulldogs who beat them by scores of 8-1 and 6-3 to capture their second title in a three-year span.
Rogers High School Class of 2024 Top 10 students
The following students were honored as the top 10 students in the Rogers High School Class of 2024. Starting at number 10 is Jelani Jackson. Jelani Jackson’s GPA is 4.1583 and is a member of the National Honor Society. She has a passion for learning, and has taken rigorous coursework all four years of study. A two-sport athlete, Jelani has been a member of the Volleyball and Softball team for four years, and has served as captain of her Volleyball team in her senior year. Jelani served as Vice President of her class, junior and senior year. Jelani has received many academic awards and honors including the 2023 Civic Leadership award from the Secretary of State of Rhode Island, Junior English Scholar award and a Science Fair finalist 2 years in a row. This young woman was the recipient of the Dr. Marcus Wheatland Award and Scholarship at our 53rd Black History Month Assembly. She has participated in Key Club for three years, serving as the Community Service Coordinator in her senior year. Jelani participated in the Prepare RI internship program in the summer 2023. A military brat, she enjoys traveling around the world and spending time with friends and family. Jelani will be attending Hampton University in the fall to study Kinesiology/Exercise Science.

NEWPORT – The Waves had to be patient to play their first game in Rhode Island this year. A rainout of last Thursday’s game at Old Mountain Field meant Friday’s game at Cardines Field in Newport became their de facto home opener.
Ponaganset softball team walks off with D-II championship, tops Westerly in eight innings
PROVIDENCE – It’s been said that it’s difficult to beat a good team three times in a season, but to win all three times in walkoff fashion?. Yes, for the third time this season – and amazingly in a span of 19 days – the Ponaganset High softball team walked off with a victory over Westerly, but last Saturday afternoon, the Chieftains did so on a very big stage, the Division II championship game, before a large crowd at Rhode Island College.

Doubles tennis tournament Saturday at CYC courts
The annual Roger Chase Memorial Tennis Tournament has been scheduled for Saturday, June 15, at the Conanicut Yacht Club’s tennis courts, 24 Whittier Road. There will be a doubles bracket for men and women; players do not have to be members of the yacht club to play. Play starts at 9 a.m. The entry fee is $30 per person, due on the day of the tournament, and includes prizes and lunch.
