KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) — Pratt’s BBQ will continue to operate for the time being, according to the owner’s son.

Earlier this week, the iconic Pratt’s BBQ property on East Stone Drive was listed for sale . The restaurant has been around for decades.

News Channel 11 discussed the restaurant’s future with the owner’s son, Jonathan Pratt.

He said his father, Tom Pratt, is looking to retire after decades of running the business.

“So we’ve been talking with him for years and I had to fly him down to Key West and get him some vacation time to convince him that, you know, life could be better,” Pratt said.

Pratt said all three divisions of the business — the restaurant, catering service, and ham store — will remain open for now.

“There is not a firm close date at this time,” Pratt said. “We’re going to continue to operate all three entities of the business for now.”

Whatever happens, Pratt said taking care of current employees is a priority.

“The plan is to retain as many employees as the restaurant can,” Pratt said. “We’ve got our catering staff that’s been there since I was a boy. So, you know, the 30- 40-year employees, we want to take care of them.”

And as far as the giant Native American statue that has stood outside the restaurant since 1970s goes, its future is uncertain.

“While he does sit on our property, I don’t think anyone can really own him. I think he’s a citizen of Kingsport more than any of us. So, maybe there’s a local high school with a relevant mascot that would like to give him a home. We just have to see what happens with the sale.”

Pratt said catering commitments will be honored through the summer.
