Two found dead in Kings Mountain home

A death investigation is underway in Lincoln County after two people were found deceased in their home on Waters Cemetery Road.

Sharon L. Barsy, 81, and her son, Donald L. Barsy, 61, were both found dead in their home on May 14, according to Lincoln County Coroner Farris Marcum.

Marcum said the initial investigation indicates that two-to-three weeks ago, Sharon Barsy died of natural causes and her son Donald died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Marcum said a neighbor called law enforcement after noticing a lack of activity at the home.

“There was a neighbor a couple doors down that had noticed that she had not seen anybody move around, been outside, the car hadn’t been moved. The grass hadn’t been mowed, it was about waist-high,” Marcum said. “She was concerned because she hadn’t seen anybody in several weeks.”

The neighbor went to knock on the door and noticed a strong odor, he said.

When law enforcement arrived, they found the mother deceased in the front living room.

“She had been deceased, I think, probably over two-to-three weeks,” Marcum said. “Upon further discovery, they found a deceased white male in the bathroom. There was a gun lying under him and evidence that he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.”

Marcum said the investigation is still ongoing but he believes Sharon Barsy died of natural causes.

“I didn’t see any gun shot, anything that led me to believe that she was murdered or killed by another individual,” he said. “I think, possibly, she died of natural causes and his mental status was altered and didn’t want to deal with that stuff and killed himself.”

Marcum said he is currently waiting for autopsy results to make a final determination, due to Sharon Barsy’s advanced level of decomposition, but foul play is not suspected.

“I’m 100 percent sure why he died, I’m not sure why she died,” he said. “I didn’t see anything apparent that led me to believe that she died from traumatic injuries.”

Marcum is also working to determine Sharon Barsy’s medical history.

The family was private and moved to Kings Mountain from Florida about 20 years ago, he said.

The investigation is still ongoing and is being overseen by Kentucky State Police Detective Frank Thornberry.
