Wildcats clinch Mid-State 2A Championship

KING — The boys’ tennis team at West Stokes clinched back-to-back Mid-State 2A Conference championship with its’ 9-0 victory over Walkertown on April 15 combined with Morehead’s forfeiture on April 11.

Senior Jayden Baughman defeated Joseph Holt 6-1, 6-2 as the top seeds, and fellow senior Todd Mendenhall beat the Wolfpack’s No. 2, Langdon Dawson, 6-0, 6-0.

No. 3 Peyton Spainhour won 6-1, 6-2 over Matthew McClelland and No. 4 Myles Knox beat J’Lynn Sheff 6-0, 6-0.

In the No. 5 and No. 6 seeded matches, Will Spainhour distinguished Ryan Thorton-Johnson 6-1, 6-2, and Morgan Dowdy won 6-0, 6-0 over Tucker Osborne.

In the three double matches, the combo of Baughman and Mendenhall won 8-0 over Holt and McCelland, and Peyton Spainhour and Knox won 8-0 over Dawson and J’Lynn.

In the No. 3 seeded double match, Will Spainhour and senior Gavin Anderson outplayed Thornton-Johnson and Josh Gaydon 8-5.

The Wildcats improved to 10-3 overall and finished 6-0 in league play. West Stokes will finish the regular season at Elkin on April 17 and at East Surry on April 18. The conference tournament is scheduled to start on April 24.
