Looking back: This week in eastern Idaho history
100 years agoA dry winter and low snowpack had farmers in eastern Idaho wondering where there would be enough water in the Snake River to sustain irrigation in the valley. “(The) government office in Idaho Falls called a meeting of canal representatives at Twin Falls for Wednesday and Thursday (May 21 and 22) to go over the whole situation and see what steps could be taken to get the greatest possible service,” the Idaho Republican of Blackfoot reported. “In the meantime, the stored water in Jackson Lake is being held for use later in the season, it being the view that ample moaning has been given thru the press of the valley regarding the expected shortage and people were urged to water early, to run it upon the pastures and on wastelands and everywhere they could to soak up the substrata early so that would not have to be done when water was needed for watering crops. It has been urged that storing water in the substrata all spring would help to keep the water level from sinking to dry up wells as well as for the protection afforded in the way of sub-irrigation, so no stored water is being released for such purposes now, the supposition being that this has been attended to.”
