The Connecticut River Bridge is Not High-Speed Rail Redux, But…
Replacing the century-old Connecticut River Bridge was never an if, it was a when. If the Town of Old Lyme had wanted to oppose the project — which frankly would have been a fool’s errand — the time to do that was prior to the federal government giving the project the go-ahead by issuing a so-called “FONSI,” a Finding of No Significant Impact for the plans. At the very least, if the town had any serious concerns, it would have been entirely appropriate to ask for needed assurances to be written into the approval, what’s technically called a “Mitigated FONSI.” No harm, no foul.
