A construction worker fell into a trench in Kenilworth and died this morning, according to police.

Kenilworth police said the incident happened around 9 a.m. They say a 911 call came in reporting a man fell into a trench that was being dug. Barricades remain up on Monroe and N 12th St. in Kenilworth.

Police say the man was trapped in mud and concrete. They say rescue attempts were made but were unsuccessful.

“At first you hear a firetruck or two and a police car but then it got to be too much. It was one emergency vehicle after another. And I saw emergency vehicles of every type from just about every town around,” said neighborhood resident Bob Woods.

The company where the man was working has not been confirmed. Very little information has been released on the incident as police are still working to notify family.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating. The agency has up to six months to complete its investigation.
