Brearley Student Receives Brian Piccolo Award from Kenilworth UNICO Chapter

KENILWORTH, NJ - David Brearley High School senior Sophia Palmadessa was honored on Sunday, April 14, at a luncheon at the Gran Centurions in Clark as the 2024 recipient of the Brian Piccolo award granted by the Kenilworth Chapter of UNICO.
The Brian Piccolo award is given to high school athletes in pursuit of higher education who demonstrate qualities similar to Brian Piccolo such as courage, friendship, loyalty, teamwork, dedication, humor and anti-bias.
Applicants for the scholarship must be graduating high school student athletes with both academic and athletic achievements. They must be students that participate in community service and have one parent or grandparent of Italian heritage.
At the luncheon, the following bio was read by Henry Trani, from the Clark UNICO Chapter, honoring Sophia's accomplishments.
We are honored to introduce Sophia Palmadessa, a David Brearley High School senior. Sophia is regarded as a vibrant student who radiates through the halls, creating a sense of positivity among her teachers and peers.
In addition to maintaining a 3.97 GPA, as a three-sport athlete, Sophia consistently participates in high school-based extracurricular activities such as varsity softball, soccer, and basketball. In addition to a rigorous curriculum that includes honors and advanced placement courses, Sophia has been an active member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Peer Advisory, Bears that Care, and fulfills all the responsibilities associated with her travel softball team.
While Sophia has dedicated time, energy, and resources to improve her performance as an athlete, she believes that her experiences in and out of school have allowed her to grow and learn lessons that have shaped her into who she has become. The person Sophia has become involves friendships, teamwork, good citizenship, and dedication.
Sophia’s positivity has allowed her to connect with others and influence the performance of her teammates. She believes that encouragement is key to fostering a sense of self-confidence; therefore, it is not uncommon to hear Sophia utter, “You got this.”
Sophia is an active member of the Kenilworth community. She is a peer tutor at Harding Elementary School and David Brearley High School. Sophia is a well-rounded young lady whose strong leadership skills allow her to adapt to new environments. Sophia will pursue a sports management and marketing career, which illustrates her passion for business and her love of sports.
