Virginia filmmaker's debut sells out Alamo Drafthouse Woodbridge's premier
Seven years ago, Spotsylvania County resident Shamila Beslow was lying in a bed at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, the result of contracting Guillain-Barré Syndrome. The rare neurologic disease with no cure had left the 45-year-old temporarily paralyzed from the waist down. One day, a stranger walked into her room and told her that her story was going to touch a lot of lives. Beslow still doesn't know whether she was a social worker or hospital employee and what exactly she meant by that comment. But from that moment on, she began writing down her thoughts about her daily struggles, which included learning how to walk again and dealing with the constant chaos wrought by her husband's former girlfriend. Initially intended to be a self-help book for single fathers, Beslow's story ultimately morphed into "When Fatal Attraction Hits Home," an independent film shot around Northern Virginia. Co-written and produced by Beslow, the movie will premiere to a sold-out crowd at Alamo Drafthouse in Woodbridge on Oct. 24. As Beslow began to recover from her hospital stay and share her story, she slowly realized her life was resembling less like a self-help book and more like a salacious show on Lifetime Channel.
