Designers transform a blank basement into a retreat
For a Modern Tudor Revival home in Pleasant Ridge that the owners purchased as a new build, GHK Design Collaborative in Birmingham turned the unfinished basement into a destination space. “When you have a blank space like that, it’s really fun for designers to create what the flow is going to be. We gave them a couple different versions. It can be fun to show clients the options and get their feedback for the best function,” says principal designer Lauren Guidry, who was part of the team. “With the renovation, they wanted a space where they could entertain or have a comfortable movie night for the two of them,” she adds. “It had to supply multiple functions with a home office and a kitchen space.” The basement already had plumbing for a bathroom. “That worked out well. We started from there and branched out,” says Guidry. A new full bath features a custom vanity and floating shelves. The tile floor has a graphic starburst pattern. “It’s nice when they have guests over. They can use that space and the office could turn into a bedroom or incorporate a Murphy bed,” she explains. A white ceiling keeps the main areas nice

E-bike injuries are getting more serious, Metro Detroit doctors warn
Metro Detroit doctors are seeing more injuries involving e-bikes and scooters , including serious fractures resembling those suffered in motorcycle crashes. Why it matters: The experiences of medical professionals could help shape how Michigan policymakers respond to the safety risks posed by increasingly powerful — and popular — electric mobility devices. Driving the news: Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard joined medical and law enforcement officials last week to highlight the risks of e-bikes, e-scooters and similar vehicles and call for stronger safety measures. The Detroit East Medical Control Authority, which oversees EMS in Detroit and several eastern suburbs, recorded 33 serious e-bike injuries requiring ambulance service through July. That's already more than the 21 in all of 2025, per WDIV . What they're saying: Michael Yusaf, an Auburn Hills orthopedic surgeon who has practiced for about 18 years, tells Axios he's seeing more e-bike and e-scooter injuries than he did five years ago. Injuries that were once rare now appear roughly weekly in his practice, although he doesn't track formal case counts. Wrist and elbow fractures are among the most common injuries he treats, sometimes requiring surgery. "What we're seeing is more high-energy injuries that are akin to injuries that

Zac Brown Band brings Vegas energy to town, topping a busy metro area music weekend
It’s been a year of love, fear and a lot of work for Zac Brown and the band that bears his name. During the past 11 months, the Zac Brown band released its ambitious ninth studio album, “Love & Fear” — the first Brown produced entirely by himself — and supported it with eight shows at the Sphere in Las Vegas during December and January. And since July, the Grammy Award-winning group, which has 14 No. 1 Country singles to its credit, has been on the road with a show designed to bring some of the Sphere flavor to more modest venues.
