Cosby battles past Sunbright, rain for another region victory
COSBY — The Cosby High School football team grew its winning streak to six games and improved to 5-0 in Region 1-1A with a 42-6 win over visiting Sunbright on Friday evening. The Eagles led 28-0 at halftime and held the Tigers off the board until the final minutes of the contest en route to their third home victory at Virgil Ball Stadium in as many weeks. Cosby battled past both Sunbright and the elements to post another efficient performance. “We did a pretty good job of executing on both sides (of the ball),” said Cosby head coach Levi Cooper. “The rain kind of slowed us down a little bit and made it a little more difficult in the passing game, but the guys did a good job.” Despite the rain falling on “The Hill” and the Tigers’ defense adjusting accordingly, the Eagles (7-1, 5-0) were able to run for 214 yards on 25 attempts, good for 8.56 yards per carry, and senior quarterback Spencer Moore completed 7 of 11 passes for 109 yards. “Sunbright ended up putting an extra hat in the box and playing Cover 0 on us,” Cooper said. “They slowed us down a little bit with

Region 1-1A football title chase heats up as Cosby visits Hampton
HAMPTON — No football team will have as direct a say in the Region 1-1A podium finishing order as Cosby High School. The Eagles, currently on a six-game winning streak and tied for first with Jellico at 5-0 in the region, visit the third-place team — one-loss Hampton — the defending region champion, this Friday evening before returning home to face the Blue Devils on Oct. 29 to conclude the regular season. Cosby (7-1) won’t worry about Jellico (8-0) just yet, however, as it will have to dispatch the Bulldogs (6-2, 4-1) this week to set up a true winner-take-all title game in Week 11. Hampton already lost to Jellico 36-22 on Sept. 18, but remains in the mix, especially if it can beat Cosby on Friday night before seeing the Eagles knock off the Blue Devils six days later. The Bulldogs’ region victories have been over Sunbright 70-8, North Greene 48-7, Unaka 66-8, and Hancock County 48-0. Outside of region play, Hampton defeated Avery County (N.C.) 46-24 and Johnson County 58-6 before falling to Happy Valley 44-16. The Eagles have rolled through their region competition, defeating Unaka 62-8, Hancock County 50-8, Cloudland 58-16, North Greene 64-28, and Sunbright 42-6.
