( WJW ) – Are you smarter than a celebrity? Prime Video announced Tuesday that Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce will host its new show of the same name.
“Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?” has been greenlit for a 20-episode order. The show is a spinoff of “Are You Smarter Than a 5 th Grader?”
“Each game will welcome an adult contestant who will rely on a classroom full of celebrities from stage, screen, and sports to help them answer 11 questions on a range of subjects, pulled from elementary curriculum, in an effort to win a $100,000 prize. They are not competing against the stars…they’re enlisting their help and, in some cases, can even ‘cheat’ off of them. And on the final question, worth $100,000, the contestant selects one celebrity to discuss the answer with before locking in. The final question is always at the 6th-grade level.”
Cleveland Heights’ own Kelce says he is excited for the new gig.
“I grew up loving game shows, and I’m excited to be following in the footsteps of so many TV icons by hosting my very first one with ‘Are you Smarter than a Celebrity,’” he said in a press release . “I’m just happy to be on the hosting side of the equation here and excited to see how these famous faces keep up.”
The show’s co-creator calls Kelce “the ultimate class clown.”
“Viewers should expect the unexpected,” Barry Poznick, general manager of MGM Alternative, said in a press release.
“Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” premiered in 2007. Hosted by comedian Jeff Foxworthy, adult contestants were tasked with answering questions pulled from elementary school textbooks. The contestants could turn to a group of fifth-graders for help on those questions.
After multiple seasons on Fox, the game show moved to Nickelodeon in 2019, where it was hosted by John Cena.
Hosting a game show would be Travis Kelce’s latest foray into non-football show business. He has hosted “Saturday Night Live,” starred in a dating competition series called “Catching Kelce,” and recently made his debut as a film producer with “My Dead Friend Zoe.”
Kelce has hinted about plans to dip his toes into entertainment following his appearance on “SNL” last year, telling the Los Angeles Times that he had been focused on football but that “there’s definitely Hollywood talks out there.”
He also said his preferred genre is comedy.
“I’m comedy all the way,” he said. “I just like to have a fun time and make people laugh.”
