KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department is using a new tool to build trust between police and youth in the community.

FOX4 got an inside look Thursday of the new equipment they’re bringing into neighborhoods to reach kids as part of the solution to violence and crime.

KCK police unveiled their new mobile video gaming center. It’s designed to bridge the gap between police and youth in the community.

“If you make a friend in middle school, you have a friend for life, and I think the police department, we really want to focus on that age group,” KCKPD Chief Karl Oakman said.

From the six video screens to the eight consoles, Oakman said it’s all fun and games.

Ten kids can play at one time in basketball, football or racing, all kid friendly games.

“You won’t find grand theft auto in here,” Oakman said.

Oakman said before touching a joystick, officers will play public service announcements talking with kids about gun safety, violence and the dangers of fentanyl and opiods.

“So, I think those are really important to our young people. and so I think it’s important to explain to young people and let them really understand that they can be the solution in this problem that we’re having,” Oakman said.

Oakman said in KCK, violent crime is down by 30%. Last year, the city said it saw a 27% decrease in violent crime.

He credits the work they’ve put in through enforcement, focusing on the most dangerous criminals and community engagement.

“I think the key is, we have to start with our young people, start with the young people,” Oakman said. “Really changing the mindset, changing the focus.”

That’s one of the reasons they’re rolling out the mobile video gaming trailer.

They want to expand that reach through youth in the community.

KCK Ofc. Tommy Tomasic said officers will talk with kids about how they’re in control of their futures.

“We’re here to help you get through your childhood, get through teenage years as much as we can, and become good citizens,” Tomasic said. “Live your life, have fun, don’t get caught up in the ten minute life styles.”

KCK Police are holding the third annual Peace Walk Saturday at 10:45 a.m. The group is meeting at N. 5th Street and Washington Avenue. The new mobile video gaming trailer will be there.
